Hair Extensions Aftercare
- It is always advisable to wash hair in the shower removing all tangles with the recommended brush first. If glue bonds have been used, leave 3 days prior to washing to allow the bonds to set. Dry shampoo may be used for this period, avoiding the bonds. Please note, if you have had individual extensions in the micro system, the hair is also pre-bonded.
- Wash hair in the shower with the head back.
- Use a shower cap in between washes when showering.
- If you have greasy hair, use dry shampoo between washes.
- Wet the hair and dilute the shampoo with a cup of warm water before applying, stroke the shampoo down the hair, squeeze gently, do not rub. Do not use any commercial shampoos, conditioners, sprays, mouse or gel mouse on the bonds or they may become soft and slip.
- Only use specialist products on the hair to keep your extensions in tip top condition. Do not leave conditioner in the hair overnight. Do not go to bed with the hair wet as it may tangle.
- Lift the hair and apply soap suds to the nape area
- Rinse thoroughly and apply conditioner from mid-length down, do not apply to the bonds.
- Rinse hair thoroughly, squeeze excess water out, do not rub, do not lift up in the towel, this may cause tangle.
- When brushing extensions always support them with one hand, over vigorous brushing will cause breakage.
- Always tie hair back when swimming, sunbathing, sleeping and taking part in sports. You may put your hair into a soft plait to keep the cuticles from rubbing together and causing friction.
- If wearing tight head gear you may experience softening of the bonds and flattening. ie: horse riding or motorbike helmets.
- Any colouring of your own hair should be done at least two weeks prior to application of the bonds. If hair need to be permed, this must also be done two weeks prior to the application. Once extensions have been fitted you may colour your own hair around the hairline and on the roots at the parting. Do not allow the solution to go on the extensions.
- Do not bleach hair extensions. Do not process hair i.e: perming, colouring, highlighting etc in any way as the chemicals used may not be compatible with the chemicals used in the hair extensions and the results may be disappointing.
- Separate extensions regularly so matting does not occur. It is best to do this when the extensions are wet. Separate each bond from its partner all the way along the rows, horizontally and vertically. Remember to do this each time the hair is washed.
- Expect some discomfort for the first 2 weeks or so. Your scalp needs to get used to the extra weight of the hair that has been applied.
- An itchy scalp signifies that you have not rinsed thoroughly, or that your scalp is getting used to the extra weight of the hair.
- Hair extensions cannot be guaranteed if you use your own shampoo as some commercial shampoos are very strong and contain chemicals the eventually break down the bonds. DO NOT USE COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS OF ANY KIND ON THE HAIR EXTENSIONS.
- In very rare, extreme cases, 1 in 50,000 clients have experienced a small amount of hair loss because their hair roots were too week to support the extensions. Unfortunately, this cannot be determined until you actually wear the extensions. We have (unless you have signed a disclaimer) conducted an examination of the hair and done a tensile test by applying a single extension at your consultation. However, this does not guarantee your roots are 100% strong enough for the extensions, only time will tell. It is extremely rare that this happens, and you must take this into consideration, if you do see signs of damage, you should call the salon for advice immediately.
- You may experience some shedding and you may lose some extensions but do not worry, this is quite normal. You may lose between 5 and 20 extensions depending on how careful you treat them.
- You should come back every month for maintenance.
- Aftercare products are available from the salon.
